Photos and commentary by Andy Steere.

These are pictures from May 4th, 2002 when I went back out to test fly my P-47 . That didn't go all that well either... flew great, but I messed up the landing.

My son Brian had control of the camera today.

pits1_320.jpg Perfect day for flying, hardly any wind. Probably a dozen pilots at the field (quite a few for our small club).

john_320.jpg John Fangohr's big Hellcat was back... but without Lance this time. Scratch built... truely from scratch... John even designed the plans, built the plugs for the fiberglass fuse, everything. It is finishing its trial flights before being painted. John swore he was going to fly it himself today... and he did very well. See the video clips below.

jeff_320.jpg A couple of Jeff Buchner's pattern ships. His yellow Kaos is around someplace.

adams_320.jpg Dan Adam's Hanger-9 PT-19. Powered by a Saito 150 I think. Looks great, flys great.

MOVIE CLIPS

(Choose a format to view by clicking on one of the two links provided. The native format for the video camera (Olympus C-700UZ) is Apple Quicktime MOV. This version will produce the best picture and sound possible, but the file sizes are large. The Microsoft AVI files were converted using Lead Multimedia Converter and while much smaller... their image quality suffers (a lot on some movies, very little on others). If you have trouble viewing these by directly clicking on the link, try right-clicking on the link, choose save to disk, and play the video ouside the browser. The MOV files require Apple Quicktime player or plugin, and the AVI files require Microsoft Windows Media Player or similar. The AVI files are converted using an Indeo video codec, if you have trouble viewing the video.)

This is the landing of my Contender. First flight of the season, and it went nearly perfectly. (well, sort of the first flight... I've been flying RealFlight G2 all winter.) The yellow stripes on the wings really help with orientation, as the chrome blends in to the background easier. Late in the evening, the wingtip-mounted bright-white LED's help too. Somebody is running up their engine close to my son, so you can mute the sound on this clip if you want.
320x240 - 15 seconds - (AVI 2.3MB) (MOV 4.0MB)

Follow this link to see the flight of my P-47.

This is Randy Loesch flying his 1/4 scale Piper Cub. Nice flying airplane... on a calm day like today. It's built from a Great Planes kit and is powered by a OS .61FX engine.
320x240 - 15 seconds - (AVI 0.8MB) (MOV 4.2MB)

This is another clip of Randy's Piper Cub.
320x240 - 15 seconds - (AVI 0.9MB) (MOV 4.1MB)

This is the take-off of John Fangohr's big Hellcat.
320x240 - 15 seconds - (AVI 1.9MB) (MOV 4.0MB)

Clip#2 of the Hellcat.
160x120 - 62 seconds - (AVI 1.6MB) (MOV 4.3MB)

Clip#3 of the Hellcat. The camera is recording some clicking that I don't know where its coming from. Probably internal to the camera.
320x240 - 15 seconds - (AVI 1.6MB) (MOV 4.3MB)

Landing of the Hellcat. John's gear retracted out from under him and the plane skidded to a stop on its bellypan. Not much real damage... bent the muffler bolts and got some grass and dirt in places they shouldn't be. He later found that one of the air lines had disconnected from the valve during flight. We agreed that his repairs would be easier than mine, and no thank you he didn't want to trade repair jobs. (grin)
160x120 - 28 seconds - (AVI 1.1MB) (MOV 1.9MB)

Dan's PT-19 landing. Better than my P-47's landing. (grin)
320x240 - 15 seconds - (AVI 2.1MB) (MOV 4.0MB)
