MMRCA-members' Aircraft - 2001 Taylor R/C Airshow

Photos and commentary by Andy Steere.

Several members of the Mid-Missouri Radio Control Association (MMRCA) were in attendance. I flew my Top Flite Contender early Saturday afternoon and spent part of my time helping Carl Johnson with his Hanger-9 33% Extra and Diamond Dust. Lance Campbell flew his F-15 Turbine and a fellow modeler's B-17. Jerry Crow helped spot and ground-crew for Lance, along with earning another Corn-award, and loosing the back half of the muffler of his backup plane, a Sig Kouger (see below for a video clip). I loaned the muffler off my Contender Saturday late and Sunday so they would have something to fly. Steve Winters also flew the Kouger as a backup plane when he had some trouble with his brand new scratch-built Gee Bee Z. David Atkins flew his Slow-Poke, and Mike Lyon flew his UltraSport.

Here is a picture of the pit area with our club's section in the foreground. The only plane visible is Carl Johnson's Hanger 9 33% Extra 330L.

Another shot, from inside the motel-room/building-area, of Carl's Extra. This shot is showing off his new carbon-fiber prop. We had to take a dremel tool to the spinner to get it to fit... which I'm sure thrilled our neighbors.

This is Carl Johnson's Diamond Dust. This aircraft was built by me and features a MVVS FAI Pylon Racing Engine, which motivates this 2.5 pound plane over 150 MPH. No landing gear and hand-launched (by me). I have one of these, nearly exactly the same as Carls, that I have flown a couple times, but I didn't bring it to Taylor.

One of the attraction at this year's Taylor Airshow was free rides for kids in a full-scale aircraft. Carl Johnson's kids took advantage of this Saturday evening before dinner. Check below in the movie-clip section for more.

While working on the smoke system on Carl's Extra, we borrowed a homemade airplane stand. This worked very well... and these pictures are mainly for Carl so he can make one himself.

MOVIE CLIPS

(Choose a format to view by clicking on one of the two links provided. The native format for the video camera (Olympus C-700UZ) is Apple Quicktime MOV. This version will produce the best picture and sound possible, but the file sizes are large. The Microsoft AVI files were converted using Lead Multimedia Converter and while much smaller... their image quality suffers (a lot on some movies, very little on others). If you have trouble viewing these by directly clicking on the link, try right-clicking on the link, choose save to disk, and play the video ouside the browser. The MOV files require Apple Quicktime player or plugin, and the AVI files require Microsoft Windows Media Player or similar. The AVI files are converted using an Indeo video codec, if you have trouble viewing the video.)

Check out Lance Campbell's flight of the F-15 Turbine and a fellow modeler's B-17.

Jerry and Steve's backup plane, a Sig Kouger, operating with the muffler from my Contender's OS .61FX engine. A quick, good flying airplane.
160x120 - 47 seconds - (AVI 1.6MB) (MOV 3.0MB)

As mentioned above, Carl's kids took a ride in a full-scale aircraft. Here it begins its taxi from the parking area, with Carl's kids aboard (daughter in co-pilots seat and younger son in back (waving).
160x120 - 8 seconds - (AVI 0.5MB) (MOV 0.6MB)

Carl's kids at takeoff and flyby. That is Carl giggling at the end.
