P-47 Thunderbolt - 2001 Taylor R/C Airshow
Photos and commentary by Andy Steere.
I don't know much about this plane... didn't get a chance to talk with the owner.
(Later learned it was a Nosen P-47 owned by Garry Adrian. 103" wingspan and powered by
a 5.8ci Sachs engine.) This is a very large Republic P-47 Thunderbolt fighter from
World War II. It is specifically interesting to me because I am working on a smaller
P-47 myself and had planned to do a similar camo color scheme (from the 56th
Fighter-Group based in England). His is probably 1/4th scale or bigger and a
bubble-top, where mine is an 1/8th scale razorback.

Left side view. You can see the 50% Piper Cub in the background and while bigger than the P-47, it isn't bigger by a lot!

MOVIE CLIPS
(Choose a format to view by clicking on one of the two links provided.
The native format for the video camera (Olympus C-700UZ) is Apple Quicktime MOV. This
version will produce the
best picture and sound possible, but the file sizes are large. The Microsoft AVI files
were converted using Lead Multimedia Converter and while much smaller... their image quality
suffers (a lot on some movies, very little on others). If you have trouble viewing these
by directly clicking on the link, try right-clicking on the link, choose save to disk, and
play the video ouside the browser. The MOV files require
Apple Quicktime
player or plugin, and the AVI files require
Microsoft Windows Media Player
or similar.
The AVI files are converted using an
Indeo video codec,
if you have trouble viewing the video.)
Here is the huge P-47 on a flyby on Saturday. The pilot had some engine trouble with this bird on Sunday, so these two are the only clips I have.
160x120 - 36 seconds - (AVI 1.3MB) (MOV 2.3MB)
A longer video clip, but a bit jumpy right at the end (full zoom).
160x120 - 62 seconds - (AVI 1.9MB) (MOV 4.0MB)
